AI Warnings Changed Everything
A recent episode of The Truth of the Matter, titled "AI Warnings Changed Everything", provided a helpful way to think about our current moment as it relates to artificial intelligence (AI) and the rapid pace of technological advancement.
Gregory C. Allen explains that since May 30th, 2023 the interest and concern surrounding AI has shifted, being driven now largely by the potential dangers that await in a future where AI becomes even more sophisticated and capable.
Moore's Law and Exponential Growth:
Moore's Law, coined by Gordon Moore in 1965, states that the number of transistors on integrated circuits doubles approximately every two years. It helps describe the exponential growth that has propelled the rapid advancement of computer processing power. This exponential growth is not limited to just the number of transistors on a chip but also extends to various facets of technology. The processing speed, memory capacity, and storage capabilities of computers have all followed similar exponential trajectories.
Allen illustrates this, saying we made great strides in computing between 1946 and 2014; and between 2014 to 2016, we made the same amount of progress as we had in the preceding 50 years (@ 7:10). It's remarkable! The progress we have witnessed in computing power has enabled innovations that were once considered unimaginable, and will continue to do so.
Serious Consideration of AI for the Future:
Allen then turns to explain that Moore's law informs our current discussion. While the current state of AI has already shown immense potential and impact, serious thinkers and influential figures are delving deeper into its implications, not because of immediate dangers, but rather in anticipation of the future (@ 12:27) It is the prospect of AI reaching new heights of sophistication that prompts this serious contemplation now (@ 16:50).
As AI technology continues to progress, questions arise regarding the ethical, social, and economic implications that could accompany its exponential growth. The potential benefits of advanced AI systems are vast, from solving complex problems to improving healthcare, transportation, and communication. However, there are legitimate concerns about privacy, job displacement, bias, and the possible concentration of power in the hands of a few.
The current concerns regarding AI are not meant to instill fear, rather they signal the importance of addressing these challenges proactively. They recognize that the responsible development and deployment of AI technologies require careful consideration of their potential risks. By actively engaging in discussions surrounding ethics, regulation, transparency, and accountability, they aim to shape a future where AI remains a powerful tool for progress while minimizing potential pitfalls.
